Tricyclic Antidepressants (TCAs)
These have been around for so long that they are prescribed by their generic names. Every now and then there's an update, such as with Tofranil PM. I have information on three of them. amitriptyline, Tofranil / impramine and nortriptyline. Other TCAs include clomipramine, desipramine, doxepin, maprotiline, protriptyline and trimipramine. |

Emsam and other MAOIs
Emsam (selegiline transdermal system), Eldepryl (selegiline), Reverse MAOIs such as Aurorix / Manerix (moclobemide) and traditional MAOIs like Marplan (isocarboxazid), Nardil (phenelzine sulfate) and Parnate (tranylcypromine sulfate). I don't have any real information on these meds. It's all what we dig up and post here. |

The valproates: Depakote (divalproex sodium), valproic acid and sodium valproate.
The valproates are one of the oldest family of anticonvulsants around. In their three different forms they are known by a bajillion names around the world. Please see the different pages for specific information on them: Depakote, Epival Valproic acid, almost always prescribed as a generic today. Valproate sodium, known by all sorts of brand names outside of the US. |

Questions About Epilepsy and Misc. Neurological Weirdness
Questions about the nature of epilepsy itself. I don't play a musical instrument, so why did the neurologist put a tuning fork next to me? Who is this Jackson guy and why is he marching around in me? If the seizures are so simple and only partial, how come I'm still having them? Who is moving all the stuff in my house when I'm not home? Why does it seem like I've asked all these questions before? N.b: we don't diagnose here, so don't ask if you have epilepsy, if your temporal lobes are messed up or anything like that. Anything that could be a psychiatric disorder should be evaluated by a psychiatrist first, regardless of the overlap of symptoms. |

How Meds Work: Antagonist? I sorta remember that from lit class...
Got questions about how all of the meds we discuss on this site work in your brain? Look it up on the drug pages! OK, not all of the pages have that section, plus that part is far from the easiest to understand. Recent stuff we've dug up regarding methods of action (pharmacodynamics) when putting people under knife and giving rats brain scans, or is it the other way around? N.b. this isn't the place to ask about which drug is best for your specific condition. This board is all about what the drugs do in general. |
