So in just the last two-three (it's all a blur) weeks I've been switched from lithium to Trileptal and now Depakote. Reading about it totally freaked me out!!! Have you all really had the bad side effects?? Pdoc also put me on Zyprexa so I'm doubly tripping on weight gain paranoia. I'm 4'11 and 97 lbs and I like it that way! Pray tell please!!! Tips or tricks??

I love my Depakote. My only complaint is that it made my curly hair strait, and a little thinner. I never gained weight from it.

  • Diagnoses:temporal lobe epilepsy/ bipolar
  • Current Meds:4000mg depakote per day

I've been on depakote since 1994 and I have to say it really has helped me. I started out on lithium which I reacted very poorly to. However I have suffered great hair loss do to being on the depakote. I had thick wavy hair but over the years it became thin and straw like. I got so pissed that I shaved my head a couple months back. There really isn't anything I can do since I have temporal lobe epilepsy which causes violent out burst in a black out state. It was either take depakote or lose my wife of 37 years. For me the side effects are worth it. I also suffered from sever migraines which I no longer do, so depakote has been a life saver for me. I'm just glad I'm 55 and married instead of 25 and single. Going bald at that age would be hard.

None of the psych drugs that might cause weight gain, do so in all people. It really depends upon the individual. I have a friend on the highest dose possible for depakote for her severe epilepsy and she is quite svelte though she is also careful about her diet. Every drug I'm on can cause terrible side effects but overall, I don't suffer anything severe..it's always a crapshoot with these meds so I would try it and keep an eye out on your weight and diet and see if it works for you.
