Can I Take St. John's Wort With Effexor?

Im on 75 mg's of effexor XR. Can I take 300 mg's of St John's Wort with this?

Only if your doctor is on board with this idea. It's generally a bad idea to mix herbal supplements with antidepressants unless you have someone who knows what they're doing monitoring you.

St. John's Wort is no herbal tea. Last I heard it was actually an official recommendation for first-line treatment of depression in Germany -- this was shortly after they banned Prozac because of the suicidality issue.

maine: SJW may look like a herb and hence "natural", but it's as serious and as strong as a real medication that comes in a pill. It's just that americans don't know much about it, nor about its side-effects. Stick to what your pdoc gives you, dude.

St. John's Wort and Effexor both impact serotonin which would put you in danger of serotonin syndrome. What you're asking is if you can take a second anti-depressant with your effexor...something only a pdoc could decide for you...and Dymphna and she said no...I'd believe her.
