I take two sometimes but in the opposite way that you do. Klonopin is longer lasting than xanax and (when I take it), I take .5 2X a day and sometimes that isn't enough and I take xanax....usually late afternoon or before something that I know will cause anxiety...like a presentation or a job interview. I've been taking both lately because I've pushed the klonopin up to bedtime and so find I need a little something in between. I'll try and go off the klonopin in a month or so or sooner if I'm feeling fantastic.

Is there any chance that your Pdoc wrote the instructions wrong? Klonopin sucks as a prn compared to the shorter acting BZD's like Xanax or Ativan. It is also less likely to lead to serious tolerance/withdrawal issues, so it is generally used as a maintenance med with another BZD to be taken as needed.

My dr just prescribed Clonazepam . 5 2 x day....so what time of day do you take yours. He also said I could take 1mg ativan at night as that is what I've been taking for a long time.

I take it 3 times a day now. When I was taking it twice I took it when I woke up and at bed time. Now I also take one around 2pm. I use ativan only when I need it, which is usually when I go out somewhere crowded or unfamiliar.

I hope it works for you Karen.

Is 0.5 mg clonazepam the same as 0.5 mg ativan? I was taking 0.5 mg ativan in the morning and around 3 pm and then 1 mg ativan at night. What amount of clonazepam would I take to equal the dose of ativan? I'm sorry but I just can't seem to get the dosage right? Do you know if switching from ativan to clonazepam right away causes any side effects? I knows its the anxiety but I can't focus on anything right now and can't figure things out.
Thanks,
Karen

There is a very helpful table outlining benzodiazepine equivalencies.

For the Ativan to Klonopin conversion, 1 mg of Ativan is believed to be equivalent to .5 mg of Klonopin.

On the leading question of this thread, yes, it is okay to take two benzodiazepines simultaneously. There is, however, a caveat.

Whenever you are using two medications with a risk of tolerance simultaneously, you will proceed far further up the scale of dependency than you would with only one. (The reasons are obvious, so I won't state them.) So certainly you need to be cautious about how often you use your p.r.n. and the tolerance that you build.

Like other posters on this thread, I am very confused about one thing.

Xanax is an ultra-rapid onset drug. Just as Zyprexa is the "in emergency, break glass and retrieve pill bottle" medication for mania, Xanax is almost always given as a p.r.n. Klonopin takes a longer period of time to kick in and has a longer half life. And Xanax, efficacy wise, burns out in less than a day, whereas Klonopin takes a bit longer.

I suggest you bring this up with your treating psychiatrist and ask about the rationale of the two. Usually, in the two-benzo scenario, there's either one being primarily used for sleep or for daytime anxiety, and then one used as a p.r.n., but the longer-lasting ones are the sleep and daytime anxiety ones, whereas the p.r.n.'s are about getting an effect into the system as rapidly as possible.

I've taken Ativan for quite a while, starting at very low dosage prn and then over 5 yrs or so as I became more anxious my dr has increased dosage. Now I find that the ups and downs of Ativan are difficult. I have GAD so need medication all the time. My dr wants me to try the clonazepam because of its longer half life and he feels that will stop the ups and downs of the ativan. If it works well for me I will stop taking the ativan. He just thought that until I get the dosage right for me ....I should take the clonazepam during the day and take ativan prn. He thought the clonazepam might not help me sleep as well as the ativan also. I tried clonazepam many years ago and found it actually made me depressed so I'm hoping it doesn't happen this time. The ativan really helps my anxiety but its because its so ongoing now and I can actually feel when the ativan is wearing off. Hope this makes sense.

I have had a headache since I started taking the clonazepam and I'm lightheaded. Yesterday at one point I had a very bad headache that lasted about 1/2 hr and then subsided back to the constant dull headache .Also I have that feeling in my chest that I get when anxiety is really bad...a fluttery heavy feeling, heavy breathing like I can't get enough air. Also very tired and no energy. I was wondering if my body is actually having withdrawal from the ativan even though I'm taking Clonazepam now or could it be that Clonazepam just isn't for me?
