A bit like going after a mosquito with an elephant gun, but it will probably work, at least temporarily.

Before Seroquel, I was chronically sleep-deprived. I sometimes felt horribly tired, but I don't think there were any other ill effects.

Have you tried sleep hygiene? Or do you know what's causing the insomnia, and can you address that rather than just medicating the insomnia?

I can't practice good sleep hygiene when it comes to my bed. I use my bed as a couch for the TV and a desk for my computer. I live with family and am "confined" to my room. I do sleep with the TV on, but it actually helps me. It's a 15 year habit. I can't take Seroquel anymore.

Thanks for the response!

Well, what the sleep hygiene thing says is, "Use your bed only for sleep and pleasure." They probably are using "pleasure" as a euphemism for sex, but still.... I keep a pile of books and my computer on one side of my bed. I think of my bed as a sort of nest, and I keep things there that I enjoy and that comfort me.

There you go. You're using your bed for pleasure, so you're off the hook. There's the other sleep hygiene things, too - I forget exactly. Keep a regular sleep schedule, don't eat a lot or drink before bed, get plenty of exercise, but not just before bed, limit the caffeine, especially later in the day, etc.

The other thing is: what's causing the insomnia? The answer to that question may also give you the answer to dealing with it.

I can't take Seroquel anymore.

Too bad. How come? There are also other AAPs; you're already on Zyprexa. How's that working for you?

And you're very welcome. I hope it helps.

Seroquel made me gain a ton of weight. Even with diet and extreme exercise it wouldn't stop the weight gain. I don't get enough REM sleep. Though I don't know why. Zyprexa at 5mg made me sleep 1 1/2-2 hours at a time and in between I'd be up only 30-60 mins. This wasn't just at night but during the day. Again, thanks!
