So after going through the medication courosel with my family doc I finally decided it may be time to see a Physciatrist who might have more direct experience with my Anxiety. She has taken me off Trazodone and reduced my BusPar dosage in half(she does not think it is working and may be contributing to some of the symptoms I have) She convinced me to give Zoloft a try again she said my family doc should have started me on a lower dose and that is why my first day the first time around was hell that and i was on another medication that actualy counter acted what the Zoloft was doing(why i am seeing a specialist) I am on to day 4 of 25mg/ day at dinner and now and am wondering- Does it get worse before it gets better? The side effects are no where near what they were round one as I have already had 4 doses vs just one before bowing out but I have had to use my emergency oxazepam 3 times already. I can't tell if it is because we cut the BusPar too soon or part of the Zoloft burn process. After 7 months of suffering I want to stick this out and make it work, just want to make sure there is a light at the end of the tunnel....

Hi Jerseyguy, cutting over from one med to another can be dicey from a mood perspective. You'll need to properly stabilize on Zoloft and have the BuSpar out of your system. As with a lot of the SSRI's, anxiety takes larger doses than depression does. I am on 100mg of Zoloft at the moment, started at 25mg like you. I noticed improvement in depression a lot faster than with the anxiety. Treating anxiety takes time (I know, crap). Don't be surprised if she continues to titrate your dosage up. Are you sleeping OK? Hang in there, dolly

Thanks Dolly- day four yesterday and day five today have been the hardest so far. I really just don't feel like getting up and doing anything. Sleep has been hit or miss, last night I woke uP around 2 am and was able to fall back asleep until 5 (I usually sleep to 7am) but other nights I have been waking up a lot more so I am hoping maybe the sleep part is past. I have two more 25mg doses before going up to 50mg and and really worried about what that might do to me. I am trying to keep going but it is tough, I feel worse then when I started taking it and that is hard for me to understand.

Don't forget you're also withdrawing from both BuSpar and Trazodone. I'm surprised she didn't give you something else to help you sleep in the meantime. FWIW I had the most side-effects when I started the Zoloft, on 25mg and 50mg - after that I titrated up and didn't even notice any Side effects. One day at a time, right now...

You could probably use some sleep meds and a slow taper from Buspar. Zoloft, at any dose, was bad for me. But that is true for any SSRI. My husband can start and stop zoloft at 100 mgs without feeling any side effects. I think it varies hugely on the individual.

Nurse Ratched- when did you realize Zoloft wasn't for you. I am on dose 6 day 6. I have not had to use a Benzo since Monday which is good for the anxiety point of view but I still don't feel myself. Decreased appetite, some neausea, light dizziness(especially first thing in the AM) and overall just feel lethargic. I know it gets better in time but if this medicine is not for me i would rather know sooner then later. I am supposed to go to 50 tomorrow night and am considering staying at 25mg until I feel more stable.

Dose 7, day 7: I had a glimmer of hope yesterday that faded quickly. I had not needed any Oxazepam since 2pm on Monday and my anxiety was at bay. Around 6:30 I started feeling the signs of a anxiety attack(uncomfortable feeling, feeling like something is wrong, sweaty palms, increasing heart beat). Usually I would run for the Ozazepam but I decided to try and wait, taking slow deep breathes and this little meditation I learned. It worked and it passes and I was so excited , I've never been able to control it before. I know it was a combination of the Zoloft, breathing, and
meditation but it was the first time I felt like the Zoloft may be working and the side effects are worth it. That did not last as I hade trouble falling asleep, and when i finally did fall asleep I awoke minutes later with racing thoughts I could not control. I tried to breathe and meditate and it did not help and I was forced to use a Oxazepam to calm down and get to sleep. Tonight I am supposed to go to 50mg and am scared. Will the side effects I feel be doubled? I could not go to work on Tuesday and had to work from home yesterday. I do not see my physciatrist until June and am hoping I can hold on until then. My greatest fear is that she will tel me this isn't working and it's back to square one with a new med. I do not know if this is the right spot or not but I have decided to share my feelings here because I think it helps.

Within 3-5 days. At first I thought it was just the post-partum getting worse. I stuck it out in several doses for a maybe 6 weeks. Then we went through several more SSRIs and SNRI. I just can't take any of them. Of course that could be bipolar related but even with mood stabilizers I can't handle them. Is there any way you could be a poor metabolizer? Good question for your pdoc if you don't see any improvement. Also be sure to tell him or her if you keep having racing thoughts or bursts of energy.

I know in the past I have had issues with medications(particularly around medications for medical procedures) wearing off quicker then expected and needing more then I should. I don't know if that is a poor metabolizer or not. Last night was the first experience with racing thoughts and I have had no issues with sudden bursts of energy, the opposite in fact I have had a lack of energy.

I just wanted to share an update for anyone trying Zoloft for the first time reading this. I took dose 12 last night and am feeling better by the day. Each day is easier and more symptom free than the previous. I am glad I held on and pushed through, it was worth it for me. My advice, listen to your body. If it is more then you can handle, stop. If you can push through, do. It does get better with time. Good luck

It usually takes 6-8 weeks to start to get the antidepressant effects of an AD. It can be quite rocky until then and some things do get worse before they get better.
